FreeBSD just released version 13.0, which is the first release of the stable/13 branch. Since it's a major release and I don't cover FreeBSD much, I thought it appropriate that I take a look at this release. So I'm going to run though a quick base installation and I might install Xorg and a desktop environment. Here's 5 reasons you may want to try out FreeBSD, especially if you're unsatisfied with your Linux distro or Windows, and want to try something different. Certainly there are more than 5 reasons, another that I though of while rendering the video was the ZFS file system. I'd love to see your comments, let me know how you feel about FreeBSD! In this video I'm going to install FreeBSD and have a first look at it. From Wikipedia, "FreeBSD is a free and open-source Unix-like operating system descended from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), which was based on Research Unix." FreeBSD differs from Linux in that it's a whole OS (Unix), from the kernel, drivers, software and documentation, whereas Linux offer the kernel and drivers only, and it's then up to the distribution to provide the rest (all distributions being derivatives of the GNU/Linux operating system). A different approach indeed. Let's see how FreeBSD works! I realize my definition of 'userland' is way too oversimplified here but I wanted to demonstrate one of the biggest reasons why I left Linux: it's a total mess. Forgot to mention that Linux is technically 'just a kernel'. All other applications are sourced elsewhere and packaged. FreeBSD on the other hand is a complete OS with its own base applications. That's why things are structured the way they are. #freebsd #openbsd #linux
Deb Goodkin 🤍 The FreeBSD Open Source Operating System is one of the oldest, largest, and most successful open source projects, with a long history of innovation. FreeBSD descended from Berkeley Unix back in the early '90s, with its lineage dating back 50 years to the original UNIX. It’s known for its reliability, stability, and advanced networking and performance. Deb will take you through its long history and highlight some of the features that set FreeBSD apart from other operating systems. She'll describe how the FreeBSD Project works and how you can contribute to the Project. She will point out some of the differences between FreeBSD and Linux, and share why individuals and companies use FreeBSD. In fact, she'll explain how you are most likely using FreeBSD now! linux.conf.au is a conference about the Linux operating system, and all aspects of the thriving ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it. Run since 1999, in a different Australian or New Zealand city each year, by a team of local volunteers, LCA invites more than 500 people to learn from the people who shape the future of Open Source. Benno Rice 🤍 An open source project’s community is what makes it a living thing. Without its community the project is a static lump of code. FreeBSD is one of the largest and longest continuously running open source projects around. Not only that, it comes from an even longer lineage before it via the original BSD work at the University of California, Berkeley. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it is without its problems. While FreeBSD isn’t in any danger of disappearing any time soon, it does have issues with attracting new contributors, keeping its existing contributors and keeping its community healthy. These issues are not always unique to FreeBSD but FreeBSD provides an interesting case study. This presentation will cover: * How FreeBSD’s community and its processes have evolved over the years and how this compares to other, often newer, projects. * What FreeBSD could learn from other projects. * How this all fits into broader issues around open source development communities and things that do and don’t work.

DISCORD: 🤍 FreeBSD - Free Berkeley Software Distribution.
