In today's episode, I'm seeing whether 3D Printed PLA dies can hold up to forming various gauges of mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. This is completely new territory for me but it was a really interesting 3D Printing experiment to do forming sheet metal. "Nissan Motor Co has developed and put into practical use ‘face-to-face die-less moulding’ that forms body panels without using moulds. The Japanese automaker says that in future, it “will use this technology to consider the commercialisation of after-service parts and repair parts for older cars.” The opposite or dual-sided die-less moulding methodology involves a robot equipped with a rod-shaped tool using the incremental moulding technology in which the panel is gradually deformed to form the moulding tool on the opposite side. It is a construction method that can form more complicated shapes. The method of forming while linking opposing tools is difficult because it involves controlling two tools, and thus far has been considered difficult to put into practical use. Nissan says it succeeded in putting it to practical use by combining accumulated knowledge in the field of production technology possessed by the company's production technology R&D Centre with the research results of tool materials from the Research Laboratory." Today, metal products are at every corner of our life, from art decoration to the zillions of connectors in electronic products, from implants inside of our human body to satellites outside of the Earth. Flexible manufacturing processes can maximize design freedom and stimulate innovation for customized products. In this talk, various forms of incremental sheet forming currently conducted at the Advanced Manufacturing Processes Laboratory of Northwestern and its collaborators will be presented to illustrate the fundamental mechanics and great potentials of these processes, as well as the challenges in modelling, control and design of this kind of highly flexible forming processes.

Metal forming is the process of shaping metal parts under high mechanical pressure. The metal forming process does not add or remove material, therefore the part maintains its original mass. Metal Forming is typically a secondary process after a metal part has either been lasered, punched, or stamped out. What is a Press Brake? A Press Brake is a machine that is designed, with the correct tooling, to form and bend your metal parts. Press brakes are rated in tonnage, and are either electrical or hydraulic. Electrical press brakes have less tonnage capacities but are very fast and efficient for forming smaller metal parts. The Hydraulic Press brakes generally have higher rated tonnage and although are slower than electrical press brakes, they have the ability to form and bend bigger pieces of metal. We've gotten a lot of question on sheet metal fab over the years. So we decided to do a brief how-to for you guys. If you plan on doing a decent amount of sheet metal fab there are two machines you'll want to have in your shop. Those are a sheet metal break and a stomp shear. There are a lot of different options when it comes to these machines from price to size. Some basic tools for sheet metal are tin snips, stomp shear and maybe a plasma cutter. And while they all have upsides, there are downsides as well. A plasma cutter, for example, depending on your skill set can be hard to get a nice straight cut and also leaves a rough edge. A stomp shear, however, gives you a laser straight line.
