Politics. Religion. Nabucco is Verdi's retelling of the Old Testament story of King Nebuchadnezzar II's religious conversion. On one side, the fiery Hebrew priest Zaccaria, battling to lead his people from oppression. On the other, Nabucco, the tyrannical Babylonian king and his adopted daughter Abigaille, who will stop at nothing to get her father's throne and her sister's lover. Will King Nabucco's ambition rob him of his beloved daughter as well as his kingdom? Nabucco was an instant success at its 1842 premiere, with the famous Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (‘Va, pensiero’) taking on a political resonance that still echoes today. The twists and turns of this epic early opera by Giuseppe Verdi are often seen as a call to the national liberation struggle that would eventually lead to Italian unity. Exile and power, displaced populations and forced migrations are themes dear to Christiane Jatahy. The Brazilian director, filmmaker and author, who was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2022, gives new life to Verdi's metaphor of the Bible by introducing the words of those who still stand up to tyrants and extremist ideologies today around the world. In this hall of mirrors, in which chorus and audience are reflected, maestro Antonino Fogliani leads the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande through Geneva’s new production of Verdi’s masterpiece along with a cast of excellent bel canto singers, including Riccardo Zanellato, Nicola Alaimo and Saioa Hernández. This new production of Rome combines the colossal and the intimate. For Michele Mariotti, conductor and music director of Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Verdi’s genius lies in his managing to combine spectacular, triumphal elements with a love story that unfolds far from public space in delicate pianissimi and sotto voce singing. For these elements to exist on stage, Turin-born director Davide Livermore has found inspiration in silent epic cinema of the early twentieth century combined with certain references to Art Deco. Soprano Krassimira Stoyanova takes on the title role with mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as her rival, the conniving princess Amneris. Tenor Gregory Kunde is Radamès, the warrior that both women love, and baritone Vladimir Stoyanov is Aida’s father, the fallen king Amonasro. The vast production of the Verdi masterpiece at St. Margarethen took place amidst the intoxicating scenery of a rustically romantic Roman quarry, which provided a unique backdrop for this live recording. The Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria counts as one of Europe’s most important open-air festivals and nearly 220,000 opera lovers from all over the world visit it annually. Nabucco tells the story of Nebuchadnezzar, ancient King of Babylon, who went mad after proclaiming himself, God. It is one of the most popular works in the history of opera and was Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813–1901) break-through in 1842. It features the most famous of all opera choruses, “Va, pensiero...“, which is a tune known to more than just opera lovers. This is an opera of epic proportions and the staging presented truly conforms to this spirit: horses, pyrotechnical special effects and more than 400 participants take to the stage.

Latest remastering techniques have been used in preparing these post but some variations in sound quality remain. SYNOPSIS. ACT ONE: A salon in the home of Violetta. A lively party is taking place at the home of Violetta Valéry, a beautiful Parisian demimondaine who is kept in luxury by her admirer, Baron Douphol. Viscount Gastone de Letoriéres arrives and introduces his friend, Alfredo Germont, telling Violetta that Alfredo has long been a silent admirer and had even called daily during her recent illness to ask after her. Baron Douphol is angered by the conversation and refuses to propose a toast when invited by the Viscount. Alfredo then accepts the invitation, and leads the guests in a tribute to beauty and love. Later, as the others go to another room to dance, Violetta is overcome by a fainting spell. Alfredo stays behind to assist her and confesses he has been in love with her for a year. Violetta repulses his love, but offers him friendship, giving him a flower which he is to return when it has withered. Alfredo, joyously accepting the tryst, bids her goodnight. When her guests have gone, Violetta muses thoughtfully on Alfredo's proffered love, but finally returns to her true character and declares that she must remain forever free to pass from pleasure to pleasure. Much to Verdi’s frustration, the work was never performed. In 1871, the director of the Milan Conservatoire asked him if he’d ever thought of composing a Requiem of his own – after all, he’d written the Libera me, the final part of the multicomposer work. Verdi dismissed the idea, saying that there were enough Requiems already. In 1873, Verdi’s friend, and favourite author Alessandro Manzoni died aged 88. Verdi had first read his novels when he was 16 years old. He was devastated at the news of Manzoni’s death, so much so he was unable to attend his funeral. This provided the catalyst for what is the grandest of all Requiems. Premiered in 1874 with the composer conducting, it was an immediate success, and Verdi toured the work to Paris, London, Cologne and Vienna – in fact he conducted it more often than any of his operas. Overtly operatic in nature, it has been called ‘Verdi’s greatest opera’, but it is a deeply spiritual work, adhering to the traditional Mass for the dead. The Anvil Chorus is the English term for the Coro di zingari (Italian Gypsy chorus), a piece of music from Act 2, Scene 1 of Giuseppe Verdi's Il trovatore (The Troubador, 1853) which depicts Spanish Gypsies striking their anvils at dawn hence its English name and singing the praises of hard work, good wine, and their Gypsy women.
