Appium v7-to-v8 Migration Guide Much waited Selenium 4 has been released in September 2021 with a bunch of new features and they remove support for the legacy protocol(JWP) and use the W3C WebDriver standard by default under the hood. Since that appium has been working to get a seamless experience of Selenium 4. Beta version of Appium client was updated by upgrading the selenium dependency but there were lots of glitches. Now they have launched the stable version with fixes, but still, there are some issues present. Hoping they will fix those issues soon. Let talk's about the changes that happened due to this up-gradation. W3C specification compatibility : Java client now supports Selenium 4, which also means it is strictly W3C compliant. It won’t possible to use OLD JWP-based server with the new version. The recommended way to provide capabilities for driver creation is to use specific option builders inherited from BaseOption Class. When creating a mobile application, organisations have a few options to choose from; mobile web, native or a hybrid application. Where web apps are just websites that can be accessed on the internet via a mobile browser like Chrome or Safari, native apps are applications that are developed for a specific platform such as Android or iOS. Hybrid apps are different because they possess elements from native apps and web apps. When automating web applications, Selenium commands are used. Nine out of ten times the same automation script can be used for mobile web applications as our desktop web applications. With native apps however, we need to look deeper into the differences between Android and iOS apps before we can use Appium commands. In this video, we are going to see how we can switch from Native context to Webview context to automate hybrid app in Appium One of the core principles of Appium is that you shouldn't have to change your app to test it. In line with that methodology, it is possible to test hybrid apps the same way you can with Selenium for web apps. There is a bit of technical complexity required so that Appium knows whether you want to automate the native aspects of the app or the web views. But, thankfully, we can stay within the Selenium WebDriver protocol for everything. Once the test is in a web view context the command set that is available is the full Selenium WebDriver API. Entering the web view context Here are the steps required to talk to a web view in your Appium test: 1. Navigate to a portion of your app where a web view is active 2. Retrieve the currently available contexts * This returns a list of contexts we can access, like 'NATIVE_APP' or 'WEBVIEW_1' 3. Set the context with the id of the context you want to access * This puts your Appium session into a mode where all commands are interpreted as being intended for automating the web view, rather than the native portion of the app. For example, if you run getElementByTagName, it will operate on the DOM of the web view, rather than return native elements.
