A review/critique/analysis of Elex, comparing and contrasting it with other open-world action-adventure RPGs Skyrim and The Witcher 3. With Elex 2 just on the horizon, I wanted to take a closer look at the first game and shine a spotlight on some of its more notable design features for which I feel it doesn't get enough credit, in hopes of maybe drumming up interest in Elex 2 and the series in general. While not a perfect game, Elex gets a lot of important things right, I feel, which makes it a much more compelling and enjoyable experience for me than other, similar games like Skyrim and The Witcher 3. This video is designed to be as spoiler-free as possible for all games (I won't be ruining any major story elements or plot twists or going into detail examining the main quest-line for each game, in other words), but I will be showing outcomes to certain individual side quests and specific situations in order to showcase how the games treat their mechanics and subject matter. I consider these to be minor and inconsequential to one's enjoyment of the games, and thus should not have any adverse effect on the experience should you choose to watch this video and then play any of the three games for the first time thereafter. Elex 2 is not a game that gives you a very good sense of purpose or even immediate goals at times, nor does it have a very interesting cast of characters or a particularly good story. Nor does it run very well or reward the player for trudging all of those issues in a way that feels proportional. Yet I can see why the uphill battle of getting much of anywhere and the perpetual mystery of what exactly you’re getting yourself into at any given time can add up to a genuine delight for the right players. There are undeniably some addicting loops to be found beneath the rubble, but not enough to make this a particularly recommendable game in a day and age where so many better iterations of this genre already exist. If this was simply a case of the game catering to a niche crowd and being “more about the journey than the destination” I could roll with that. But with mediocre-at-best combat, vanilla-at-best graphics and some staggeringly bad performance issues eating away at Elex 2’s already limited appeal, I can’t help but advise those entering this version of Magalan to proceed with caution.

Aan Steven en Skate de taak deze onbekende game van Duitse makelij te spelen en vervolgens op waarde te schatten. ELEX is zoals gezegd geen titel die bij menig gamer op de radar staat. De game is afkomstig van Piranha Bytes en wordt uitgegeven door THQ Nordic. De game speelt zich af in een post-apocalyptische wereld. Het genre actie rpg wordt tegenwoordig gedomineerd door een klein scala aan games. Waar vroeger Bethesda met hun Fallout en The Elder Scrolls franchises de koning was binnen het genre, is daar met de release van The Witcher 3 verandering ingekomen. De game van CD Projekt Red geldt als een mijlpaal in het genre. Voor nieuwkomers als ELEX is het zodoende moeilijk hoge ogen te gooien. Zoals gezegd zijn Steven en Skate niet te beroerd de game een eerlijke kans te geven. Wat is jullie mening over ELEX?
