What is NAS hard drive? 🤍 NAS hard drive is designed for systems running 24/7. This mainly means network attached storage servers. As you may well know NAS servers will turn the drives into a combined storage volume with a 1 or more drive failure protection. RAID means that data is broken down into small pieces and is written across all drives in the RAID group. This means NAS hard drives have to be made to last through neverending reading and writing operations. How is it different than regular drive? It is very different than regular desktop drive found in your PC where data is occasionally added to it. Regular drives are made to be turned off daily. Also, desktop drives would unlikely be used in the RAID (mirror or stripe at best). Desktop drives will more often feature higher spin rate. This is because computers using them need to be able to quickly request data from it at any given time. NAS drives will spin at the slower rate or even hibernate when no one is accessing data. And it will also spin faster if there are an increased number of people accessing the data. This means NAS drives are more power efficient rather than desktop drives like WD Blue/ Black or Seagate Barracuda. This description contains links to and Amazon. Synology NAS - How to Speed up RAID Creation

What is the Best Synology RAID and why do I need it? 🤍 Large RAID storage for archive data storage solutions RAID is not a new thing. Originally created as means of combining multiple smaller hard drives and combining them into 1 large storage volume (so your PC would only see one hard drive like your C:/ drive, instead of several smaller hard drives connected). RAID stands for either Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Now the reason for the two different versions of the letters in RAID is largely due to how storage has changed. As Hard drives have grown progressively larger in capacity such as the Seagate 8TB Archive drive from , the need for creating massive volumes has been outweighed by the more current trend of data storage arrays needing Redundancy. Redundancy? Striping? Checksums? Mirror? What does it all mean? Large Scale RAID Storage Solution It should be mentioned that RAID is not something exclusive to NAS. In fact it has long stood as the means for all Storage arrays to maintain Hard-Drive safety in most Direct Attached Storage (DAS) and the more high profile Storage Area Networks (SAN) devices. However it’s importance in NAS is because of the length of time most Network Attached Storage devices will be powered on for… often 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – for the most part un-monitored. Having a sufficient safety net in place to preserve your data in the event of one of your hard drives breaking down or failing is paramount. In almost all RAID scenarios, you will have an element of redundancy whereby you will lose a portion of the total space available which will be used to maintain a duplicate or copy of your total data. If a drive fails, you can then recover all your data from the redundancy/redundant portion of storage. Ok, so I know about redundancy now. Any other reason to set up RAID? Read and Write data in a RAID on hard Disks Read and Write speeds! That is another key reason for many setting up a RAID of their bundle of hard drives. Of course some RAID levels grant higher read and write speeds than others and often those with the highest speeds leave you with the least protection or the smallest capacity total. Picking which RAID level suits you will be largely based on your setup and the number of drives you plan on using. Below we have broken down the different RAID levels that are the most commonly available, their advantages and disadvantages and the minimum number of Drives needed to build each. NAS systems are incredibly convenient. They are the - quite indispensable - data tanks of today. Your own cloud. In the electrical room, the server rack or just on the desk, maybe. In many cases, a NAS full of mechanical hard drives is fine. Not everyone needs super fast access times. However, for those who use their NAS intensively and therefore want some extra 'snappyness': SSD cache makes that possible!

Below are some more popular guides. What is the Best NAS hard drive of the Year 🤍 - When choosing your first NAS device, as important as it seems to get the right network attached storage device, even more important is making sure you get the right hard drive or SSD Media to store your files on. Technically any hard drive (HDD) these days can be installed inside a network attached storage device. On the one hand, this is a good thing for those that like choice, but it is also a bloody awful thing for the indecisive or those that just want to know what the best hard drive to buy is right now. In order to use any hard drive in your NAS, you will need to make sure it is the following: SATA connectivity (so some Enterprise drives will also support SAS) At least 5400rpm or higher otherwise you there will be lag during access which only gets worse, the more drives you add. at least 120GB and above in capacity, as often applications and NAS operating systems, plus updates, will be well over 50-80GB alone over the years At least 64MB cache Yep..that just above covers it! In this video, I'm adding a 2TB Western Digital Red drive to my server, which maxes out the available SATA plugs on the motherboard. Synology NAS SHR+BTRFS versus RAID 1+EXT4 - RAID ReBuild Test

15.10.2019

What is the difference between SHR and RAID? 🤍 Synology Hybrid RAID or SHR, has been around for quite a while now, and though it has not made the big impact that Synology NAS’ Btrfs file system has, it is still an increasingly popular choice for many when it comes to protecting their hardware and their data in a Hard Drive Enclosure. Both NAS and DAS utilise RAID as a form of protection from an HDD or SSD failing and the consequences of data loss that can follow. It should always be highlighted that both traditional RAID and SHR are NOT forms of Backing up and you should ALWAYS have an offsite or at the very least off-system backup in place creating real-time images and copies of your mission-critical data. However coming back to the subject at hand, which method of redundancy should you be considering for your storage array – RAID or SHR? Order your NAS from the NAS Experts, - 🤍 What is RAID?  RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, was originally many years ago as a way of combining lots of smaller disks together to create a much larger storage volume, with redundancy as a secondary priority. However with the large scale growth of Hard Drives these last 5 years and more, with Terabytes of data becoming available on single disks, the primary function of RAID has shifted towards data protection. That isn't to say that pooling smaller drives does not still happen, but with drives currently available to buy in 14TB such at the Seagate Ironwolf NAS Drive, you can see why the purpose of RAID in an archive and cold storage is more about hardware protection. Available in numerous types, but the most popular of which is below: JBOD – Just a Bunch of Disks, not really a RAID in any shape or form. RAID 0 – A method of combining two hard drives or more into a single GIANT volume of data, however, if you lose one drive, you lose all your data! RAID 1 – Using pairs of drives, this will HALF your total capacity, but give you a complete and up to the second copy of all your data. Meaning if a drive fails, you have an EXACT copy ready to access. RAID 5 – One of the most popular RAID levels, It requires at least 3 drives or more, data is written across the drives in stripes (waves) and across each stripe of data one drive holds a tiny nugget of data called ‘parity’ with is basically a coded blueprint of the data on the other drives in that stripe, then each stripe has the parity deposited on a different disk each time. The result is that if a drive fails, the system can re-build the data using the parity (blueprints) on each stripe. This can take time though and it should also be noted that the read and write of data in a RAID 5 is a little slower than normal as the system has to work out background calculations whilst writing data. RAID 10 – Think of this as a combination of RAID 0 and RAID 1, or RAID 1+0. You require at least 4 drives and drives are paired up as 2x2. The result is that you have two hard drives whose capacity to added together, and another pair of drives creating real-time copies (again, up to the second) of all the data. Probably the most expensive of all the RAID types here in terms of cost per GB, but gives you much MUCH higher read and write speeds compared to other RAID levels. Here is the accompanying STH main site post: 🤍 The new WD Red Plus is a solid move for clearly disclosing the use of DM-SMR technology in the industry. We discuss what the WD Red Plus means for the industry. We also discuss the sequence of events that led to the WD Red Plus being introduced and how the WD Red has been marketing in the meantime. Indeed, even WD's product pages as we publish the video do not make this Red/ Red Plus distinction nor do they mention the positioning updates found in the company's blog post. Do you NEED NAS Hard Drives, Really? 🤍 Hard drives are not exactly new technology. They have existed in one form or another for over 20 years in the consumer market, all the time getting bigger in capacity and smaller in physical design. That should not come as a surprise to any of you. Such is the way of technology that no sooner have we got used to the way things are, then a brand of the manufacturer will turn around and bung on a new connector, introduce a faster and more expensive version, or worse, the entire industry changes it’s mind overnight and all our old technology becomes useless. Most tech buyers feel like ships in the sea, at the whim of the sea and its currents. This description contains links to and Amazon. QNAP NAS - How to Speed up RAID Creation

26.04.2019

What is the Best QNAP RAID and why do I need it? WARNING I do not recommend this enclosure any more... There is forced encryption that appears after the drive is in use for a little while... This cannot be turned off, if your enclosure fails (not the drives), you will NOT have access to your files for recovery... The drives are encrypted and are not recognized outside of this enclosure... It has been confirmed here: 🤍 Western Digital MyBook Duo: Replace Hard Drives So, it turns out that I under-estimated the amount of space I needed, so now it's time to upgrade the two 2GB HD"s that came with the MyBook Duo. I decided 2x the size and go with two 4GB Western Digitial Red drives, the same kind that ships with the unit. The video walks through what it takes to replace the HD's and rebuild the array so the disk is ready to use. Western Digital MyBook Duo: 🤍 Western Digital 4GB Red Drives: 🤍
