Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) inside Windows 2012 R2 have reached the release 3.0 In the long list of new features, an interesting one (dedicated to the world of BYOD) is the workplace join. Workplace join answer to the need, for users to access company resources from their devices without giving the control on them to the network administrators. However it answers also to the need of the IT staff to keep control on what the device is able to do on the corporate resources. Workplace join enables users to register Windows-based and IOS-based devices for single sign-on and access to corporate data. The aforementioned device ado not join Active Directory, but the workplace join process generates a device object in AD and installs a certificate inside the device. From now on the network administrators are able to use this authentication to allow or remove access to network resources for the device, while users enjoy a single sign-on experience. To realize my lab, I have used as a starting base this good post from Keith Mayer "Why R2? Step-by-Step: Solve BYOD Challenges with Workplace Join in Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1" 🤍 First step has been to add the Active Directory Federation Services role to my server Aphrodite (that is also my Domain Controller and Certification Authority). The configuration of the AD FS role requires a service account, so I created a Group Managed Service Account called FsGmsa with the following cmdlets (adapting the ones used by Keith) Add-KdsRootKey EffectiveTime (Get-Date).AddHours(-10) New-ADServiceAccount FsGmsa -DNSHostName Aphrodite.lync2013.corp -ServicePrincipalNames http/ Aphrodite.lync2013.corp An SSL certificate is required too, so I used my beloved DigiCertUtil to create a CSR. Please note that the Common Name must be the FQDN of the AD FS server, and you need the same name as Subject Alternative Name too. In the SAN names, enterpriseregistration.yourdomain is REQUIRED too. I have used a command line to submit the request and generate the SSL certificate certreq -submit -attrib "CertificateTemplate:WebServer" path\...\lync2013_corp.txt Then I have imported (and verified) the aforementioned certificate. With all the requirements satisfied, I have launched the configuration of the AD FS role I have defined a standard user, Ipaduser, (I will use it to simulate a real world scenario of a domain user joining his/her IPad to the domain). I have exported my root CA certificate in a .cer file and copied it on Google Drive (because I need to open it from Safari on the IPad later) Next step is to initialize the Device Registration Service that, by default, is disabled and stopped. I used the Initialize-ADDeviceRegistration cmdlet, using, as ServiceAccount, the previously configured Lync2013\fsgmsa$ The next steps where done on the IPad: Open the .cer file of the root CA inside Safari and import it as a profile Open the following url 🤍 and Authenticate with Lync2013\IPaduser Accept the Workplace Join profile Then, back to the Aphrodite D.C. I have verified that the device was registered inside A.D.
Difference between Azure AD Registered Azure AD joined Azure AD Joined is for Corporate owned and managed devices Authenticated using a corporate id that exists on Azure AD Authentication is only through AAD. AAD Registed Device is for Personally owned corporate enabled Authentication to the device is with a local id or personal cloud id Authentication to corporate resources using a user id on AAD. As you can imagine things have gone wild in the modern workplace world lately. Everyone being forced to work from home has accelerated adoption of working remotely. One thing I have noticed recently is there seems to be a bit of confusion between a device that is Azure AD Joined and Azure AD Registered. What is the difference? 1. Think of Azure AD Registration as: Azure Active Directory knows about the device but does not require a corporate identity to authenticate into the device. 2. Think of Azure AD Joined as: Azure Active Directory knows about the device and *does* require a corporate identity to authenticate into the device. If you want to map this to the on-premises world then imagine Azure AD Registration as a workgroup computer on the internal network. To access file servers and printers you need to manually map to them, and when you do; you are prompted to enter your domain username and password. Think of Azure AD Joined as that computer is now a member of your Active Directory domain. That computer is trusted and you signed into it with an Active Directory account. Now when you connect to file servers you are not prompted for authentication. Azure AD Registration Typically you would use Azure AD Registration for BYOD or non-corporate devices. These are devices where the user logs into the device with one identity (local account, Hotmail account, FaceID etc), but then they access corporate resources with another identity (eg. username🤍company.com). The reason for requiring Azure AD Registration would be to meet minimum compliance or security requirements to access those resources with the corporate identity. Azure AD Joined An Azure AD Joined device would require the user to sign into the device with a corporate identity from the very start. So at the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen, the user is signing in with username🤍company.com. Once they get to their desktop and their user profile is loaded, everything in that context is under their corporate identity. Why use one method over the other? This is really one of those “how long is a piece of string” questions, and so this doesn’t turn into a 50 page blog post, I’ll only list the high level reasons. Azure AD Registration User Benefits: Single sign-on to cloud resources, can be used for Windows 10, iOS, Android, MacOS Organisational benefits: Conditional access policies and compliance can be validated when enrolled into Endpoint Manager and further controls (such as minimum password complexity, encryption, corporate app store etc.) can be pushed to the device. Azure AD Joined User Benefits: Self-Service password and Windows Hello PIN reset from the lock screen. Single sign-on to cloud & on-prem apps. Enterprise state roaming across all AAD joined devices. Organisational benefits: Full management and configuration options either via Endpoint Manager or co-management with Configuration Manager. Devices can be enrolled into Windows Autopilot for rebuilds. On-boarding Azure AD Registration Windows 10 Download and sign-in to the Company Portal App Settings - Account - Access Work or School Group Policy (if device is local AD domain joined) iOS/Android/MacOS Download and sign-in to the Company Portal App Azure AD Joined Windows 10 Settings - Account - Access Work or School - Alternate Actions Out of Box Experience (This device belongs to my organisation) Windows Autopilot iOS/Android/MacOS Not applicable Conclusion With both Azure AD Registered and Azure AD Joined devices you can ascertain compliance and use conditional access policies if they are managed by Endpoint Manager. If your organisation owns the device, consider Hybrid Azure AD or Azure AD joining them. If it is a mobile device (iOS / Android) or if the device is owned by the user, then use Azure AD Registration. Azure AD Registration gives users a better cloud experience while enabling organisations to enhance their security posture by validating devices that access their corporate resources. Azure AD (and Hybrid AD) Joining gives users full access to cloud and/or on-prem resources, can simplify Windows device deployments, enables greater single-sign on capabilities and promotes a self-service culture that empowers users. Hopefully that makes things a little clearer for you. I tried to make this explanation non-technical, so let me know in the comments if it made sense to you.

Lauren Hoebee aspires to become part of the Dallas Top 40 Executives under 40. Through seeking out an administrative internship, supervising two hospital departments, networking, and working on completing a dual MBA/MHSM degree, her next step is to land an associate administrative job to be eligible to apply for the HCA COO Fast Track Program. Ms. Hoebee has been extremely involved in the Denton, Texas community working with small businesses through Enactus, teaching group exercise classes at various gyms, and volunteering through school programs. Her passion is to help empower young adults to pursue a healthy and fulfilling life. Workplace groups are a powerful way for people and teams to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge. When you first create a group, you'll have the option to automatically create a group chat. As members join or are added to your group, they'll also join the linked chat. If a member leaves the group, they'll simultaneously leave the chat. If a group member leaves the chat, however, they won't leave the group.
