Cyclone Nivar made a late-night landfall near Puducherry. The tropical storm has weakened from a "very severe cyclonic storm" to a "severe cyclonic storm" with a wind speed of 100-110 km per hour, gusting up to 120 km per hour, the weather office said in a statement. The coastal states have been bracing for the cyclone - the fifth-strongest category on India's scale of seven storm types - and more than a lakh people were evacuated from low-lying areas. Nivar has brought with it heavy rain and strong winds and forced authorities to declare a public holiday till Thursday, close the Chennai airport and metro services. Cyclone Nivar is likely to cross coasts of Tamil Nadu & Puducherry late on November 25. The cyclone will cross the coasts as ‘very severe cyclonic storm’. It is expected to make landfall between Mamallapuram and Karaikal. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. Cyclone Nivar: In less than two days, Cyclone Nivar has turned into a very severe cyclone and headed towards the east coast to make its landfall about 150 km south of Chennai, near Puducherry between Karaikal and Mamallapuram. The weather office said the cyclone 220 km south-east of Chennai already has a wind speed of 110 kmph, which would cross 155 kmph while crossing; it is strong enough to leave devastation in its wake. Puducherry has shut down till tomorrow and banned crowds from assembling. #CycloneNivar #RepublicTV The NDRF has earmarked 30 teams to launch rescue and relief operations in view of the cyclone 'Nivar' that is expected to hit the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between Tuesday and Thursday, officials said on Monday. A senior National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officer said while 12 teams have been pre-deployed, 18 are on standby in these states and the Union Territory of Puducherry. These teams will further be deployed in coordination with local authorities for relief and rescue works, including assistance in evacuation of locals from affected areas. A NDRF team has about 35 to 45 personnel, depending on the task at hand, and they are equipped with tree and pole cutters, basic medicines and other tools to help affected people. The National Crisis Management Committee, headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, on Monday met here and apart from reviewing various measures in view of the cyclone, it also directed various stakeholders, including state governments concerned, to continue to work with an aim of zero loss of life and early restoration of normalcy in affected areas. 3 people were killed in Cyclone Nivar-linked incidents in Tamil Nadu. The very severe cyclone made its landfall near Puducherry early this morning.
