My biggest ever hit, made in 1984 for Record Shack Records, which sold seven million worldwide. How they ever went bust after that is a mystery, but I stepped in and rescued the whole catalogue from the liquidator. Twenty three years later it still sounds amazing, and isn't it about time for a remake? I discovered Evelyn while holding auditions in 1975 in Chicago, arranged by Danny Leake, who I'd met the year before, in England, with his group, 100% Pure Poison. In February 1976, Evelyn's first record, "Weak Spot" and a song by a young Chicago postman, L.J. Johnson, both charted in the same week, and both acts were flown over to appear on Top Of The Pops, both on the same show. The entire music business was flummoxed as to how two completely unknown young black singers from Chicago, who had never even recorded before, both had hits on entirely different labels in the same week as each other. It was a further eight years before Evelyn went on to record her classic, the seven million selling "High Energy", and I wish I could have a few more of those.

Fue un período relativamente fugaz el que duró en el Hi-NRG, por lo menos su apogeo a mediados de los ochentas, debido al avance de la tecnología ligada a la electrónica. Si lo escuchamos hoy día podría sonar algo apagado o sin fuerza a comparación de ritmos más modernos como el dance, trance, la electrónica etc., además es difícil encontrar grabaciones sin el ruido de fondo de los discos de vinilo. Pero eso no quita que hubo buenos temas que durarán para siempre en nuestros gustos y recuerdos. Eran un referente en las discotecas de ese tiempo (todavía no se les llamaba antros) y en los bailes de la calle como las discos móviles, incluso en los sonideros tropicales llegaban a tocarse. El High Energy cumplió su objetivo de hacer bailar e influir en la moda, y para otros hasta se convirtió en un estilo de vida. Además sirvió como referente a otros géneros electrónicos por venir. Se nos viene a la mente enseguida la discotequera móvil Polymarchs y sus recopilaciones de música bailable sobre todo del Hi-NRG. Hubo otras como Rhamses, Soundset, Winners y Patrick Miller. This song is probably one of the greatest dance songs of the 80s. It was released in 1984. Everytime it was played in the clubs in 1984, it automatically filled the dance floors. I can never figure out why it was never played on the radio in the U.S. From what I read, it was a huge hit all around the world. The only explanation is that the "anti-disco" movement of 1980 really hurt "dance recordings" in the 80s. Radio DJs won't play dance music on the radio. Madonna was probably one of the few artists that was able to get away with it, though LOL Clubbers actually knew she was the new DISCO QUEEN of the 80s xD
